Uttaranchal,
the land of hill stations of India, abounds in places of
sanctity; age-old pilgrim centers where the devout Sikhs,
Hindus, Muslims and Christians alike converge every year to pay
obeisance to their gods, braving vagaries of weather and other
human travails. Uttaranchal, the 27th State was formed on 9
November 2000. Uttaranchal may only have 17 per cent of Uttar
Pradesh in geographical area but it is the golden goose in terms
of tourism and forest product. Holy shrines like Gangotri,
Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, and resorts like Nainital
and Mussorie attracts 83 million tourists in a year. Haridwar
and its Kumbha Melas earn Rs. 1, 500 crore revenue annually from
tourism. Six of the seven national parks of former UP are now
under Uttarakhand. Annual earnings from the forest products are
Rs. 135 crore. The rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Sharada generate
resources for hydroelectric power to the tune of 1000 MW. The
region is blessed with magnificent glaciers, majestic rivers,
gigantic Himalayan peaks, skiing resorts and dense forests.
Nature has endowed this region with so much beauty and spiritual
bliss that the land is also known as Dev Bhoomi (Land of Gods).
In this abode of the gods it is only fitting, therefore, that we
begin our pilgrimage in the highest regions, the
Himalayas, closest to the celestial beings.

revered Hindu destinations like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Uttarkashi,
Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath are located here.
World renowned for their breathtaking beauty as well as
religious importance, they make Uttaranchal a water hole for the
religiously inclined, quenching their spiritual thirst with its
numerous sacred sites. Hemkund Sahib, an important Sikh
pilgrimage center is also located in Uttaranchal and is thronged

stations like Dehradun, Musoorie, Pithoragarh, Ranikhet and
Lansdowne are full of people escaping the terrible heat of the
plains.

offers a wide range of adventure sports one can choose from.
River rafting, mountaineering, fishing, mountain biking,
trekking, mountain safaris, skiing and paragliding are some to
name just a few. Auli is now the best high-altitude adventure
sports destination in India and Rishikesh is famous for the
opportunities it offers for river rafters
